Influenza Virus

Everyone feels the effects of the flu bug now and then, but do you ever wonder how it enters our bodies in the first place? I wanted to provide some information about the flu that you might not have known already, and I learned some new facts myself!

How do I know if I have the flu?

I know you probably think of nausea and vomiting when you think of the flu, but those aren't really considered flu symptoms. Real symptoms include a fever, coughing, sore throat, fatigue, headache, body aches, and chills. Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea sometimes occur, but those symptoms don't usually mean the flu.

The influenza viruses in this electron micrograph are each about 100 billionths of a meter long. Copyright 1994 Veterinary Sciences Division. This image of influenza viruses was used with permission from Janet Stansell.
