Missions
On her first mission Shannon was a crew member on STS 51-G,
which launched from the Kennedy Space Center, Florida, on June
17, 1985. Following 112 orbits of the Earth in 169 hours and 39
seconds, STS 51-G landed at Edwards Air Force Base, California,
on June 24, 1985.
Shannon next flew on the crew of STS-34, which launched from
Kennedy Space Center, Florida, on October 18, 1989. After 79
orbits of the Earth in 119 hours and 41 minutes, STS-34 landed at
Edwards Air Force Base, California, on October 23, 1989.
Shannon then served on the crew of STS-43, which launched
from Kennedy Space Center, Florida, on August 2, 1991. After 142
orbits of the Earth in 213 hours, the mission concluded with the
landing on Runway 15 at Kennedy Space Center on August 11, 1991.
Shannon was a crew member of STS-58, which launched from
Kennedy Space Center on October 18, 1993. The mission was
accomplished in 225 orbits of the Earth in 336 hours, 13 minutes,
01 second, STS-58 landed at Edwards Air Force Base on November 1,
1993.
More recently Shannon was selected to be a crew member aboard
Russia's Space Station Mir. Her journey started with liftoff from
Kennedy Space Center, Florida, on March 22, 1996 aboard STS-76.
Following docking, she transferred to Mir Space Station. Her
return journey to KSC was made aboard STS-79 on September 26,
1996. Shannon traveled 75.2 million miles in 188 days, 04 hours,
00 minutes, 14 seconds.
