Music by Richard Rodgers
Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II
Book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse
Produced by Special Arrangement with
The Rodgers & Hammerstein Music Library
The Sound of Music is based on the factual account of the escape of the famous singing Trapp family from Austria during the Nazi regime. The story, for which Rodgers and Hammerstein did the score and Lindsay and Crouse the libretto, was drawn from the book The Trapp Family Singers by Maria Augusta Von Trapp.
The musical opens in Nonnberg Abbey in 1938 and traces Maria until, as Captain Trapp's wife, she leaves Austria. Unable to fit into abbey life, Maria is sent by the Mother Abbess to serve as governess for the Trapp children. Baria breaks the pattern of the rather militaristic raising of the Trapp children and teaches them to sing. The children fall in love with Maria, and Maria in turn falls in love with the Captain.
The Captain, having discovered that his fiancee Elsa and his friend Max are willing to go along with the Nazi party, breaks off his engagement with Elsa and Marries Maria. When they return from their honeymoon, the Nazis are in power and are determined to force the captain into their service. A local music concert provides a chance for the family to reach the abbey for safety. After a brush with a Nazi search party, the family begins its flight to freedom over the mountains.
