The famous novel Oliver Twist was written by Charles Dickens almost one hundred years ago. From that day to this, the character of the boy hero, who goes by the name that is the title of the story, has been cherished in literature as a pathetic and lovable personality. In his early life, Oliver experiences the extremes of poverty and misfortune, undergoing abuses almost beyond belief.
Running away to London, Oliver meets with no better fate until after many harrowing and unhappy experiences among thieves and pickpockets. He is finally befriended by some well-to-do persons to whom he is at last proven to be related, by ties of blood as well as bonds of compassion.
Just as Oliver Twist is a boy hero that will never die as long as literature lives, the character of Fagin, the old Jew who trains boys and girls to do his stealing for him, and then rewards them very poorly for it, is horrible in his dishonesty and miserliness. That Oliver is able to withstand all the evil influences to which he is exposed, is a moral victory that gives the story and inspirational as well as literary value.
Dickens wrote Oliver Twist as a comment on juvenile delinquency and poverty in his lifetime. Dickens' original Oliver Twist is one of the greatest of the English classics.
