Fanny Brice was born Fannie Borach, the child of immigrant Jewish parents on the lower East Side of New York, on October 29, 1891. She began her stage career in vaudeville houses at the age of 13, performing in amateur night contests. In 1910, Florenz Ziegfeld attended her act in a third rate theater, and engaged her for his Follies. Fanny Brice, hailed as one of the great stage comediennes and equally effective singers, was to appear in more editions of the Ziegfeld Follies than any other star. Beginning in the late 1930's, Miss Brice was best known for her creation of the character Baby Snooks, a popular radio feature until her death in Hollywood, California, in 1951.
Barbara Streisand starred in the Broadway Show, opening in 1964 and received an Oscar for her portrayal of Fanny Brice in the 1969 movie, Funny Girl.
