Manson-NW Webster Cougar InvitationalFrom Scott Ervin's article in the The South Hamilton wrestling team captured the team title at the Manson-NW Webster Cougar Invitational on Saturday, December 5 in Manson and looked quite impressive doing it. The Wawks crowned four individual champions and had one runner-up on the way to the team title. Amos Greene at 135, Hesston Johnson at 145, Heath Johnson at 152, and Keith Vulgamott at 189 pounds were the individual champs for South Hamilton. Jay Miller at 160 was the second place finisher for SH. A total team effort, explained head coach Todd Coy. We had every wrestler contribute points. I was pleased with how our kids at 103, 112, 119, 125, and 130 hung in there for us. Amos Greene was the first Hawk champion. He planted Cory Mumman of MVAO to the mat in 4:48 to win the title. A surprise for us was the performance of Amos Greene at 135. We thought as the season went on that Amos could be a real factor for us; we didn't really expect it to happen so soon, Coy said. Hesston Johnson battled Josh Pyle from Schaller-Crestland in a rematch of last year's championship match that Pyle won. This time Johnson came out on top with a 10-9 decision. Heath Johnson took control of his championship match against Jake Thoma of Manson-NW Webster and never looked back. He beat the Cougar 11-1. The Johnson brothers turned in a strong performance, commented Coy. Hesston had a tough weight class and looked real strong winning it. Heath really dominated his weight class. Keith Vulgamott was the final champ for South High. He planted Joe Saunders of Ogden to the mat in 1:25 to win the title. We also had a strong performance from Keith Vulgamott at 189 in winning his first varsity tournament ever, Coy said. Trent Johnson placed fifth at 103 pounds. He pinned David McCabe of Clarinda Academy in 3:37 in his final match. Roger Hayes II finished in sixth place at 112. He lost his final match by a fall to Eliason Johnson of MNW in 3:10. Tony Pederson brought home fifth place at 119. He won his final match by a fall over Adam Neppel of Southern Cal in 2:39. Jake Vold was a third place winner for the Hawks at 125. He glued Eric Hansen Alta to the mat in 3:45. Anthony Buck finished in fourth place at 140. He dropped his last match 6-3 to Nick Varner of MVAO. Justin Thompson was fourth at 140 pounds. He lost his last match 8-1 to Kyle Ford of MVAO. Jay Miller was second at 160. He was pinned in his final match by Evan Greime of S-C in 1:48. Dan Fox placed fifth at 171 pounds. He won his last match with a pin in 5:43 against Shane Waybill of Clarinda Academy. |
