Local Geography Bee Winner

Sixth grader Leigh Nelson, center, was the winner of the South Hamilton School's local National Geography Bee held Tuesday, January 9.  Leigh was one of 97 students in fourth through eighth grades who participated in the event.  Ben Carlson and Will Shelton were the Masters of Ceremony for the bee that tested students' knowledge of the world's geography, climate, languages, and cultures.  P.J. Heinz, TAG Coordinator, sponsored the activity.

The final question for Leigh was, "What US territory has the motto, Where America Wakes Up?"  Leigh's winning answer was Guam.

The contest is sponsored by the National Geographic Society.  Leigh must now wait to learn the results of her written qualifying test which could make her eligible for the state contest held in April.  State winners will advance to Washington, D.C. for the chance to compete for the national title and a $25,000 scholarship.
