Gregor Mendel's Studies
The theories of heredity attributed to Gregor Mendel, based on
his work with pea plants, is well known to any student of
biology. Mendel studied many plants, but he was really interested
in pea plants. His studies were known as hybridization.
Hybridization is when one or more species are crossed or bred. He
wanted to find out the rules of heredity. Heredity means what
traits are passed on from parent plants to child plants. His
first presentation was about his eight of experimentation with
artificial plant hybridization. Most of Mendel's work was largely
ignored until sixteen years after his death. During his studies
he also experimented with bees trying to improve honey
production. Doing this he was also collecting data to test his
theories of inheritance.
