South Hamilton honors Max Whitlock

A capacity crowd packed the South Hamilton gymnasium last Thursday to honor longtime band director Max Whitlock as he directed his final concert.   Whitlock has been band director at South Hamilton since 1954.   He has subitted his resignation following the summer band program.

In the picture at top, superintendent Dick Textor shared a moment of humor which Max and members of his family seemed to enjoy.  At upper right, Max received a plaque from Board of Education President David Young.   In the third photo, the band members had a special gift for their leader.

March to be dedicated to Max Whitlock

At the spring South Hamilton Community High School band concert, it was announced that band alumni had commissioned Frank E. Piersol, former Iowa State University and former University of Iowa bandmaster, to compose a march that would be dedicated to Max Whitlock.   The march should be ready for concert performances next year.   It is the intention of the band alumni to publish the march so it can be a continuing recognition of a band director who gave so much to his band members.

Since this is a gift from band alumni, please inform your family and friends who are band alumni and encourage them to share in this gift.   A donation may be sent to: Max's March Fund, c/o Keith Petersen, Farmers State Band, Jewell.   A record of band alunni contributors and their addresses will be presented to Max when the premiere performance is given.

Maxi-March was composed by Frank Piersol, who was long-time director of Bands at Iowa State College, and then in his later years, on the staff of the Music Department of the University of Iowa.    Both Max Whitlock and Frank Piersol personally knew Karl King.    And, both of these men are seen on the Karl King website.

The trio of this Great Plains March is familiar because it is the South Hamilton School Song.

Appologies are offered, because of the motion seen near the end of the Great Plains March.
It was caused by the rising of the audience, much like a standing ovation given for a fine perforance.
