On May 30, 1987, the Iowa Lions Clubs met in Ames for their state convention.    People watched the Lions State Convention Parade on Ames Main Street and Fifth Street.

The 1987 South Hamilton Middle School Marching Band and other parade entries lined up close to Beardshear School.   All entries not leading the parade then walked for many blocks until it was their turn to cross Duff and begin marching.

That's where the parade actually started and where there were people lining the street to watch the parade.    The parade went west the length of Main Street, turned north one block to 5th Street, and came back east on 5th until the parade route ended at Duff, one block north of where the parade began.  The middle school band performed three tunes many times.

The Iowa Lion Magazine of June, 1987 carried many articles.

Page 5 tells much about the Ames Parade, including the bands from Clear Lake and Odgen, the winners of first and second place in the High School division of the parade.

Page 6 mentioned the South Hamilton Junior High Band and their first place win in their division.
Kendra Hill holding her trumpet is pictured at right.

The next year, 1988, it would be the South Hamilton High School Band that marched in Ames for the 1988 Veishea Parade.

View two pages of photos of that parade.
