Chrysalis or Pupa

Once the caterpillar is about ten to twenty days old it stops eating and looks for a firm leaf or twig. It then will spin itself a pad or button of silk. After becoming attached to a leaf or twig the caterpillar will shed its skin for the last time. Inside the chrysalis the caterpillar changes into an adult butterfly. The caterpillar in the next twelve to fifteen days will turn into liquid and the inner organs will reorganize. From this liquid the butterfly grows. At first the chrysalis stage will look like a polished green stone. At the end of the pupa stage the chrysalis will become transparent. The colors, legs, tongue, abdomen and wings of an adult butterfly will be seen.
